Application
Agarbatti Perfume & Dipping Compounds.
A dipped agarbatti is only as good as its perfume and its dip. The stick absorbs a solution of perfume in a solvent; how much it absorbs, and how the perfume behaves in the smoke, decide both the scent and the cost of every box.

What the base demands
- The dip ratio
- Perfume is diluted in a solvent — conventionally DEP (diethyl phthalate), or IPM and benzyl benzoate where a phthalate is unwelcome — at somewhere between 1:2 and 1:5, depending on the strength of the compound and the price point.
- Absorption moves cost
- How much dip the stick takes up moves the cost per box more than the price per kilo of the perfume. Weigh sticks before and after dipping.
- Burn character
- Resins, woods and balsams read well in smoke; delicate top notes burn off. Evaluate a lit stick in a still room, not a blotter.
Starting doses
| Format | Working load | What limits it |
|---|---|---|
| Agarbatti dip | 15–30% perfume in the dip | Equivalent to roughly 1:2–1:5 perfume to solvent; absorption by the stick sets the real cost. |
Every range here is a commercial starting point, not a limit. The IFRA conformity certificate for the specific compound and product category — and the law where you sell — always override it. How to work out your dose →
Families that work
Warm, resinous and spiced: amber, labdanum, benzoin and incense with cinnamon, clove, saffron or pepper. Wood at the centre: sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, guaiac and cashmere woods, with little else competing.

Questions
- What is the ratio of perfume to DEP for agarbatti?
- Commonly between 1:2 and 1:5 perfume to solvent, depending on how strong the compound is and the price the stick must hit. Test absorption on your own sticks.
- Can I use DEP-free solvents?
- Yes. IPM and benzyl benzoate are common alternatives where a phthalate is unwelcome; they change absorption and burn, so re-test the ratio.
- Which notes work best in agarbatti?
- Resins, woods, balsams, oud and rich florals such as rose and white flowers. Light citrus and fresh notes mostly burn away.
