Application
Fragrance for Hair Oil.
Hair oil is a leave-on product that sits on the scalp for hours, often in heat and humidity. The fragrance has to mask the base oil’s own odour, stay stable in it, and stay within the limits for leave-on use.

What the base demands
- Mask the base
- Crude or minimally refined oils — coconut, mustard, amla preparations — carry their own odour that competes with the fragrance. Test in your actual base oil.
- Stability in oil
- The fragrance is dissolved straight into oil and exposed to air in an opened bottle for months; choose materials that do not oxidise or discolour in it.
- Leave-on limits
- Leave-on use means the IFRA certificate is usually the binding constraint, not performance. Keep doses low and confirm against the certificate.
Starting doses
| Format | Working load | What limits it |
|---|---|---|
| Hair oil | low; confirm against the IFRA certificate | Leave-on use: the category limit usually binds before performance does. |
Every range here is a commercial starting point, not a limit. The IFRA conformity certificate for the specific compound and product category — and the law where you sell — always override it. How to work out your dose →
Families that work
Rich white flowers: jasmine, tuberose, orange blossom, gardenia and ylang-ylang, often creamy and heady. A bouquet or a single flower at the centre — rose, iris, violet, peony, lily of the valley — on musk and woods.

Questions
- How much fragrance goes into hair oil?
- Low — and set by the IFRA certificate for the leave-on hair category rather than by performance. Ask for the certificate with your sample.
- Which fragrances suit hair oil?
- Jasmine, rose and other florals are traditional in India; they also help mask the base oil’s own odour.
- Why does my hair oil smell different after a month?
- The base oil may be oxidising, or the fragrance is reacting in it. Store cool and dark, and test stability before a production run.
