Application
Perfumery Materials for Fine Fragrance.
Fine fragrance is where naturals and aroma chemicals meet at their most exposed: in alcohol, on skin, with nothing to hide behind. Consistency from lot to lot is what lets a formula written today be rebuilt next year.

What the base demands
- Specify by identity
- Build formulas on materials identified by botanical name or CAS number, from named producers, so every lot can be matched to the last.
- Clean in alcohol
- Absolutes dissolve clearly in ethanol; concretes leave waxes. Choose the form for the base.
- Maceration matters
- The final character of an extrait or EDP settles over weeks of maceration; judge it then, not the day it is mixed.
Starting doses
| Format | Working load | What limits it |
|---|---|---|
| Extrait / parfum | 15–30% | Concentrate in alcohol. |
| Eau de parfum | 10–20% | EDP and EDT are marketing terms, not regulated strengths. |
| Eau de toilette | 5–15% | The label tells you nothing reliable about concentration. |
| Cologne | 2–6% | Light, citrus-led builds. |
| Body mist | 1–3% | Solubiliser choice often limits you before the dose does. |
Every range here is a commercial starting point, not a limit. The IFRA conformity certificate for the specific compound and product category — and the law where you sell — always override it. How to work out your dose →
Families that work
Dry woods — cedar, vetiver, patchouli, ambergris — lifted by citrus, pepper and aromatic herbs. The contrast of citrus top notes against a mossy, patchouli and labdanum base, often with a floral or fruity heart.

Questions
- What concentration is an eau de parfum?
- Commonly 10–20% fragrance concentrate in alcohol, but EDP and EDT are marketing terms, not regulated strengths.
- Absolute or concrete for perfume?
- For alcohol-based perfume, absolutes — they dissolve clearly in ethanol. Concretes leave a waxy haze.
- How long should perfume macerate?
- Weeks rather than days is common practice; judge the final character after maceration, not on the day of mixing.
