Application
Fragrance for Shampoo, Body Wash & Hand Wash.
In a rinse-off product most of the fragrance goes down the drain. What the customer remembers is the bottle on opening, the lather in the shower and what stays on hair or skin — and each is a different problem.

What the base demands
- Deposition, not dose
- Only the fraction that survives dilution and rinsing stays on hair or skin. Heavier, less water-soluble materials — musks, woods, ambergris notes — deposit; light citrus mostly rinses away.
- Clarity and viscosity
- Perfume is an oil load in a surfactant system. Add it before you tune the salt curve, or a clear shampoo can haze or lose viscosity after you have finished formulating.
- Solubilised scent reads weaker
- In clear bases much of the fragrance sits inside micelles, so perceived strength lags the percentage on the batch sheet.
Starting doses
| Format | Working load | What limits it |
|---|---|---|
| Shampoo | 0.3–1.0% | The surfactant system decides how much reaches the nose. |
| Conditioner | 0.4–1.0% | Deposits better than shampoo, so it can read stronger at the same dose. |
| Body wash & liquid hand wash | by trial, typically within the shampoo range | Same rinse-off IFRA category as bar soap. |
Every range here is a commercial starting point, not a limit. The IFRA conformity certificate for the specific compound and product category — and the law where you sell — always override it. How to work out your dose →
Families that work
Clean, airy and watery: sea notes, ozonic accords, cucumber and fresh citrus over soft woods and musk. Juicy fruits — pear, berries, peach, lychee, apple — over a floral heart and soft musks.

Questions
- What percentage of fragrance goes into shampoo?
- Typically 0.3–1.0% of the finished product as a starting point, confirmed against the IFRA certificate for the rinse-off category.
- Why does my clear shampoo smell weaker than the percentage suggests?
- Solubilised fragrance sits inside micelles and releases into the air less readily. Test at the real dose in the finished base, not on a blotter.
- Can the same fragrance be used in shampoo and soap?
- Often, but check stability in each base. Soap’s high pH is harsher than a shampoo’s near-neutral one.
