Application
Reed Diffuser Oil & Room Spray Fragrance.
A reed diffuser runs on capillary action: the reeds wick the solution up and the fragrance evaporates from their tips. The base, the load and the reeds matter as much as the perfume.

What the base demands
- The base
- Diffuser bases are typically alkyl benzoate blends, DPG or a low-odour glycol ether. The base controls wicking speed and how long the bottle lasts.
- More is not stronger
- Past roughly 30% the solution gets heavier, the reeds clog and diffusion slows rather than improves.
- Room sprays are a solubility problem
- In a water or alcohol spray, solubility in the carrier is usually the real ceiling, not the fragrance.
Starting doses
| Format | Working load | What limits it |
|---|---|---|
| Reed diffuser | 15–30% in the base | Above roughly 30% wicking slows. |
| Room spray | 3–8% | Solubility in the carrier is usually the limit. |
Every range here is a commercial starting point, not a limit. The IFRA conformity certificate for the specific compound and product category — and the law where you sell — always override it. How to work out your dose →
Families that work
Clean, airy and watery: sea notes, ozonic accords, cucumber and fresh citrus over soft woods and musk. Dry woods — cedar, vetiver, patchouli, ambergris — lifted by citrus, pepper and aromatic herbs.

Questions
- How much fragrance oil goes in a reed diffuser?
- Commonly 15–30% in a diffuser base. Above about 30% the reeds clog and the diffuser slows down.
- What base should I use for a reed diffuser?
- Alkyl benzoate blends, DPG or low-odour glycol ethers are common. Each wicks at a different rate — test with your reeds and bottle.
- How much fragrance goes into a room spray?
- Typically 3–8%, limited mainly by how much the carrier will dissolve.
